Cilantro (Coriander, Kottimera)

Fresh Cilantro (Coriander, Dhania, Kottimera):

Coriander (Cilantro, Kottimera, Dhania, Hu Sui, Dhanyak)

Indispensable to my cooking, I can’t imagine preparing food without this herb. More about Cilantro – here and here.

For this Weekend Herb Blogging, it’s Curly Parsley at Kalyn’s Kitchen and Keerai(Amaranth) at My Dhaba.

  1. oh i just love this herb!!!! and i guess this is best in mexican, italian and indian cooking… taco soup and rasam is unimaginable without cilantro … ( i remember when i first came to US i bought parlsey instead of cilantro 🙂 looks alike but tastes too different )

  2. I also love this herb, although, at the beginning, I had problems to get accustomed to it’s special flavor.
If I don’t have any fresh coriander underhand, I still have some in my freezer in case I want to cook something Asian, South American or Mediterranean. I also keep some coriander root in my freezer as I love making south east Asian curries/specialities…

  3. Priya.. I did the same thing in the beginning. Confusing except for the smell. 🙂

Rosa..trying out new herbs is always an adventure, they can evoke strong ‘like or dislike’ feelings. I also had same problem with parsley.:)

  4. I adore cilantro–as any look at my recipes should tell a clever reader!

I like growing it fresh in the summer–but if I try to grow it in the winter inside–my cats eat it.

    They eat the basil, too.

They have good taste, at least.

  5. cilantro! This herb confused me a lot in my first years of meeting it! Since it resembles the parsley I am used to, when you are not paying attention to its smell at the store you might end up buying a bunch and bringing home. Then you wonder why anybody would ever eat such a (weird) smelly herb. This was 9 – 10 years ago and now I know better! Nice pic Indira!

  6. Barbara, after reading your comment, I gave some cilantro to Kittaya. He ate it, I always try our foods(uncooked) like spinach etc., this is the first time he tried something other than packaged kitty food.

    Fethiye..thanks!

  7. Try him on fresh basil the next time you have it–the stronger smelling the better–my cats will decimate an entire bouquet of it if I leave it on the counter.

Some cats also like mint, which is good, because sometimes cat breath is not so nice.

  10. My cat loves coriander and carrot peelings! I haven’t tried him on basil, but I guess my plan for a herb garden (in pots on the balcony) may not work with him around!

  11. Just been reading about this. High levels of Aluminium are found in the brains of people who have died of Alzheimers disease compared to people who have died of natural causes. Cilantro actually removes aluminium from from our bodies, so that is good enough reason for me to eat it. There are high levels of Aluminium in tap water due to it being a by product of fluoride. We should all really demand they stop putting fluoride in tap water.
