Moong Dal Rasam (Pesara Pappu Charu)

Like bitter gourd curry and chappidi pappu, this moong dal rasam is again one of the recipes, only my mom prepares and very special to me. When I am out of ideas/vegetables or tired of too much food, I make this rasam. A small bowl of rasam with little bit of hot rice and ghee, on the side, a small piece of juicy lime pickle… just enough!

Roasted Moong beans, Red Chilli Powder, Tamarind and Onion

1 cup yellow moong dal (pesara bedalu)
Onion, one - cut into chunks
½ tsp each- red chilli powder and turmeric
Small marble size tamarind pieces
Salt to taste

Preparation of Moong dal rasam(soup) is very simple. Roast moong dal lightly in an iron skillet to light brown color first. Let cool. Take the roasted dal in a pressure cooker, wash and then add onion, red chilli powder, turmeric, tamarind along with about a glass of water. Pressure cook to three whistles and turn off the heat. Once all the valve pressure is released, remove the lid. Add salt and mash the dal to smooth consistency.

In a seperate vessel, do the popu or tadka (toasting the mustard seeds, cumin, curry leaves etc, in one teaspoon of oil/ghee). Add the smoothly mashed dal and two glasses of water. Have a taste and adjust the seasoning (salt, chilli and tamarind) to your liking. Bring to a boil and let simmer for about 10 to 15 minutes on medium heat, strring in-between. My mothers comforting rasam will be ready.

  1. I love recipes like this…easy to make, and very comforting.

I swear; we really are going to get a pressure cooker!

It’s on the list of ‘must-gets’…but I think I’m getting my extra storage freezer first!

  5. Hi Indira- that rasam rice looks inviting. I tried your first rasam recipe a couple of weeks back with fresh cumin-pepper powder. Needless to say it turned out fresh tasting compared to ones made with pre-made powders. This goes into my must-try rasam list along with your chana dal rasam. Thanks…

  7. instead of pressure cooking, is there any other way to prepare the beans?

    Indira says…
Hi Rokh, you can cook all kinds of lentils, the old fashioned way (first soaking then cooking/simmering with water on stove top) . Only thing is it takes time, lot of time.

  9. i made this today. Its the most simple yet delicious ( with ghee its yummy )recipe .Its with lot of protien and with the least fat. i liked the idea of roasting the moong dal. It gives it a rich flavour. i made ur spinach dal too.And got to tell u that the taste of spinach dal is getting tastier day by day. I added one green chilli along with the red chilli powder. Taro root fry, spinach dal , moong rasam and rice and pappad are for lunch today..YUMMY !!! all these simple and healthy recipes are rally great for daily meal. Thanx for the recipes indira.

    Indira says…
Wow, Priya.. Your lunch sounds wonderful, like a full thali meal. Eventhough I posted spinach dal recipe with red chilli powder(on that day, I didn’t have green chillies in stock), I often make it with green chillies only. Back home, they never use red chilli powder with spinach for dal. Next time try it like that only with green chillies, Priya. I am sure you are going to like it. Thanks for the comments and I love your enthusiasm.

Is there a book I can buy?

I’m very glad you liked my recipes. Unfortunately, there is no book which could give you all these together. I might put these in a book in the future and I’ll update you, when I do it.

  19. Hi, Your blog is fantastic. I found it by happy accident while doing a search for rosematta rice! Question on the rasam: I just purchased a pressure cooker, but it doesn’t have a whistle. Can you give me a time equivalent for 3 whistles? Thanks!
