Cook Books

First time tagged, that too, by the sorceress who utilizes her powers only for good deeds – the benevolent Stephanie.

1. Total number of cook/food books I’ve owned:

Cook Books I Own

That’s all I have and that’s enough for me, for now.
I rarely buy hobby books nowadays, mainly because it’s becoming a big hassle for us to carry them whenever we move places. We both already have a big collection of books related to our professions. There is always a library nearby and plenty of books to flick through.

2. Last cook/food book(s) I bought:
That would be the Vegetarian and Vegetable Cooking by Christine Ingram.

3. Last cook/food book I read:
That would be The Man Who Ate Everything by Jeffrey L. Steingarten. Just last weekend, finished reading and returned it to the library.

4. Five cook books (or one) that mean a lot to me:
Malathi Chandur’s cookbook in Telugu is the one most valuable to me. Because it was my first buy and the author’s old world charming writing style is so entertaining and her recipes are pure gold.

Malati Chandur Cookbook Malathi Chandur Cook Book In Telugu- Recipe of Bobbatlu

5. Which five people would you most like to see fill this out in their blog?
(Isn’t this cookbook meme going around for past two months?)
I am going to tag the always and forever a foodie, Shyam (aka Shammy) of Food In The Main.

  1. I have a similar book in tamil. I agree that they are the most useful boooks when you at least want to get a taste of home cooking.

Indira- I will be passing through cleveland on my way to Detroit this weekend. I read the West side market there is good? Have you been there and what is your opinion?

  3. Wow, you have a big collection:) (ducks face).

Kidding aside, isn’t Malathi Chandur book an old edition like 50s, 60s?

  5. K – The books I bought all have pictures accompanying every recipe. I need beautiful photos in a cookbook.
Why don’t you write about your collection in your blog. Please consider this as sort of an informal ‘meme’tation. I would love to see your collection in photos.

  7. Veena, I don’t know whether Chandur’s cookbook is still in print or not. I bought mine in early 90’s. Did you check any Telugu books selling sites? or You can check at Vishalaandhra book stores (they have several branches in HYD and also in other cities)in your next trip to India.

If you are looking for one particular recipe, maybe I can help you and scan that page to you.

  8. Hi Indira.. I love your blog a lot. Your pictures are delicious. Makes me hungry every time I look at them.
Ive started cooking only about 1 and half years ago. Right after I got married. I received Malathi Chandur’s cookbook as a wedding gift from a friend from Hyderabad. So.. yes it is still in print. Think It can be found in Higginbothams.

    Indira replies:
Thanks for your nice words and for the information, Liz.
    That’s one useful wedding gift.:)
I went through your blog, you are doing good, keep it up.

  14. We moved to Canada in 1967. I collected a lot of Malati Chandur’s Pramadavanam Recipes as a teenager. They moved with me everywhere I went. They are still my reference material. I learned only 5 days ago that she passed away. May her soul rest in peace.

    I love Mahanandi site.

  15. Hi Indira. I would like to know how to make ‘kova kajjikayalu’ from Malati chendur’s book.
As you may know , this is not kova – as in mawa, solidified milk. This kova covering is more like fondant – just milk and sugar cooked together for some time and beaten to stiffness.
I know this in theory, haven’t had a chance to try.
If you make and post it, could you kindly inform me at all?
    In Gratitude
    sujata
