Boiled Peanuts

Freshly harvested raw peanuts, boiled in salted water – we grew up eating them and we both love them. They are one of the popular street foods in India. But they are hard to find here in US, particularly in the northeastern states. Imagine my surprise when I saw them at Subji Mandi, NJ during our recent trip.

Raw Peanuts

We bought 5 pounds, we couldn’t wait, ate half of them raw on our return trip. We cooked the remaining half in salted water. They are wonderfully tasty and we couldn’t get enough of them. We should have bought lot more. Perhaps next time, whenever that’s going to be.

  1. Maybe we can start something with our weekend herb/plant/ingredient blogging. It’s kind of fun to write about ingredients for a change. By the way, your photos of the deep-fried veggies are amazing. I am trying to send people to see them with a link back from my herb blogging photo.

  3. Hi Indira:

I love peanuts boiled in salt water. It was favorite snack that my mom made. I made them one time using peanuts I bought from Dillons and they didn’t taste good at all. I should probably look for them in an Indian store somewhere.

Funny story: – I had found your blog by accident a couple of months ago and really enjoyed reading it. But then silly me, didn’t remember the URL. Since that time, I have been trying to find it, I remembered that you were going to India and you said something about Kanceepuram sarees, I searched using those keywords with no luck. Just a little while ago, I was doing dishes and I was cleaning a “kadai” and remembered the blog entry you had written about finding one for 25 cents and BOOM I got on my computer, put in “kadai 25 cents flea market” in google and yours is the first Website that came up :).

    Thought I’d share this :P.

  4. Do your boiled peanuts go hard once they’ve cooled, or is it just a problem I face? 🙂 If yours dont, PLEASE tell me the secret of keeping boiled peanuts soft, Indira!

  5. I just love boiled peanuts, not just in the shell. You can try this with shelled peanuts, with a dollop of salt, in a pressure cooker, without the weight. 10 minutes and its done.
    Sooo good!
