This Year I Dare (Food Wise)

Ilva of Lucullian Delights who started the meme “2006 Food Challenges” (or “This year I dare”), and Winslow of Seven kinds of Soy Sauce, they both tagged me, to share 5 things I want to do for 2006, food wise. So here they are…

Blogwise:
1 Blog about Idly, Dosa and Vada, the delicious breakfasts of India, before my blogs one-year anniversary, in beautiful images.
2 Prepare and blog about traditional Indian sweets like ‘laddu’, ‘jangiri’ etc.,
3 I so want to prepare and blog about my favorite cake “German Chocolate Fudge Cake” and also, I don’t know why, but I’m very drawn to this American style, artery clogging, disgustingly decadent sweet “Krispy Crème Donut Pudding”. First, I’ve to find people to feed it. πŸ™‚

Personally:
4 Going minimal on every Wednesday – Reducing the food consumption gradually to a full day fasting. I call it, my ‘Yogi diet on Wednesdays’. I was doing this before I went to India last year, started it again last week; it takes some time to get along with the hunger pains.:)
5 Continue food blogging to improve my skills and knowledge.

Thanks Ilva and Winslow for tagging me to share my ideas for 2006. I’d like to tag Priya of Sugar and Spice, to share her food ideas for 2006 with us.

I was little bit late to respond to the meme, Ilva. Sorry about that, I was coming up with goals. πŸ™‚
I’m confident that I’m going to complete/follow the challenges that I set forth for 2006. Thanks again, for making me think.

  4. Krispy Kreme Donut Pudding.

You know, Krispy Kreme is the spawn of Satan. They taste so good, but they are so bad for you! (All three of us in this house are avowed Krispy Kremeaphiles.)

You like German Chocolate cake, too? Cool–it is one of my favorites, but I never make it because no one else in this house likes it.

    Idli and dosa. Yum….

    Indira replies…
Me too, Love Krispy Kreme donuts. Main problem with them is weight gain and portion control is impossible.

  6. I followed the link to Krispy Kreme Donut Pudding – I think even looking at the photo clogged a few of my arteries πŸ˜€

About your first rez – hey, ALL the photos you take are fantastic, so you’ve got that covered already! On to the next challenge…

    Indira replies..
    Very tempting, I know.:)
Thanks for your compliment Shammy, that’s very sweet of you.
Dosa, idly.. I prepare them regularly but I shied away from blogging about them. I want to take photos worthy of their beauty.
I’m going to give it a try before April.

  7. Can’t wait to see your take on Idlis/dosas/vadas, Indira!

Btw, do think of posting a paratha recipe for us, please? pretty please?

    Indira replies…
Sorry Kay. You might already noticed this, I’m very bad with recipe requests.
But just for you and only if you promise, that you’ll try it within a week of my posting. πŸ™‚ Deal?
BYW I read your comment about wheat halwa at VKN’s foodblog. You mean the halwa, made with soaking the wheat in water and grinding it for wheat milk, then cooking the milk with sugar, right? Very time consuming to prepare but taste is to die for. This is another temple ‘prasadam’ in our area(Nandyala). Wheat halwa was also one of the traditional recipes, I’ve on my list and thinking of making it in Feb.

  8. Pretty achievable challenges Indira.

On yogi fasting, please do not do full day fasting, I mean, the whole 24 hours fasting as prescribed in a yogi fasting. Skipping a meal once in a week is fine, per me.

Isn’t it a bit of torturing the body by doing it the full 24 hours without food or drinks, not even water? How do you do that?

  9. Hi Indira! What a tempting and mouthwatering item to resist. At first i thought “oh my goodness!Krispy creme donuts pudding….”. But now i’m totally ok with it after i saw about your yogi diet.I can’t wait to taste it. And good luck for the challenge about Idli/ Dosa/ vadas. Thanks for the red chilli-garlic powder recipie.By the way, that picture of 3 peppers was very excellent and the description comparing to our three rivers is even more adorable. And what a wonderful way to cheer for the steelers. GO STEELERS.

    Indira replies,
Mouth watering, you say. Guess what I’m going to bring for your next party? πŸ™‚
About red chilli-garlic recipe, try it in small quantity, then change the proportions to your liking.
    Yay… Go Steelers!

  10. I’ll be very keenly watching for the Indian sweets posts. I go to some of the sweets stores in the Indian area of Chicago, and right now it’s a complete crapshoot for me whether I get something very light and delicious or greasy and heavy. I just can’t tell by looking at them, and I can’t get anyone in teh busy store to reliably tell me the names of these treats unless the name for all is “There you are.”

    Indira replies..
I know, even I don’t know, the names of sweets. they sell here in Indian sweet shops, lot of variety from all over India. And the response to our questions, nil or ignored. No ‘customers first’ philosophy in our shops, very frustating, even for us.:)

  11. Deal! Deal! Deal! I’m already jumping with joy here. I promise, I will try the paratha within a week after you post the recipe (see, I even went on record saying that! I’m that desperate for a great paratha recipe)

Oh! I’m doing a happy dance here. I can’t wait for the wheat halwa. Yes, it is the same traditional recipe where you soak the wheat grains for 1-2 days and extract thick milk out of it and leave it alone for sometime to allow the thick milk to settle down (I heard some even leave it for a day or so) and then make to-die-for halwa out of it. Can’t wait to see your recipe! πŸ™‚

Btw, I made your lemon pickle! It’s still in final soaking stage. I cheated and tried it when I added the masala and it was very good! Cant wait for 2 more days to go, so I can start having it.

    Indira replies,
I thought you are going to say ‘whatever’ to the deal. dammit. πŸ™‚
Now I’ve to deliver, oh boy.
    Please don’t expect much, really.
