Indira garu,

Where do you normally buy your containers/planters for gardening? Any store that you recommend, which has lower prices? Any suggestion appreciated.
Thanks, Swarna

Since we rent our house we do a lot of container gardening. I learned a lot from the square foot gardening method. We get an excellent crop of tomatoes in a very limited space. Each plant has a one foot by one foot square of soil about eight inches deep. As the plant grows I pinch off any suckers and train it to grow one long vine that is easy to manage. I feel like I am getting about the same amount of tomatoes off of each plant as I used to from a regular garden.

Indira replies:
Thanks Keith for sharing tips about container gardening.
The planter I featured is about 10 inches deep, but I planted the tomatoes in about half square foot distance from each other. I went greedy, it seems.
For this year I am going to keep them like that, my garden budget won't allow me for anymore purchases. Next year, I'll certainly remember your tips. Thanks.

I am going to post pictures of my herbs and tomato plants this Sunday, Indira, along with a "how-to" on growing plants in containers, and a mini-review of "self-watering" planters.

We are supposed to have sun on Saturday, so I can take pictures then! (It has been really gloomy and rainy here--not good weather for taking pictures of any parts of my garden: not the container gardens where most of the food plants are growing, nor the shady border we just revamped, enlarged and planted.)

Indira replies:
Thanks Barbara, I'll certainly check your post on Sunday. Thanks for letting me know.
Same here. I’d have grown a sprout from my head if I were a seed, it’s been so much and non-stop rain. :)

Indira, your tomatoes look great. My mom sometimes brings me a plant or two, but I don't have good soil here so must garden in containers as well. I am planning to try those methi sprouts everyone seems to be growing - if the sun stays out awhile!

Thanks for visiting and commenting about the sona masuri rice - we're eating it up quickly. :)

Indira, the plants look great. Guess what, I was searching for some information on growing basil, and found out that if you plant a basil with the tomato plants you will get tastier tomatoes. Have you heard about that?

hi ...I enjoy your blog a lot. I am a garden enthusiast and by looking at the picture I feel like the container is not big enough to support all those tomatoe plants. I dont know how big it is. Tomatoes take grow up to be big and bushy and need a trellis or some sort of support later on.

Indira replies:
Thanks Renu. Like you, gardening is a favorite hobby of mine.
The container is a big one. I am hoping it'd fit them all. I hate to do this to tomatoes but I don't have a choice, with rented place and all that rules.:)
I've planted these just last week, Renu. I'll certainly add some support to the plants in coming weeks. Thanks for your concern and sharing it with me, I do appreciate it.

Grape tomatoes! Wonderful little sweet/sour fruits of nature. All the best for your garden. (Does Kittayya guard them?!)

Indira, is it very difficult to grow a decent Tulasi? What all do you need to do grow it?

Indira replies:
Thanks VT.
Kittaya loves to smell plants and he won't do any damaging things like tearing the leaves etc., He is a good boy.
Good seeds and plenty of sunlight ... with these it's really easy to grow Tulasi. I had a tulasi plant when we were in Houston. Left it with friends when we moved here. Cold weather is detrimental to Tulasi, the delicate leaves don't take well.

I have three grape tomato plants on my deck! I shall have to post pictures of them as they grow! (I also have an entire box of three different kinds of basil, and will have two boxes of mixed herbs!)

Please do post pictures Barbara. I'd love and enjoy peeking at other bloggy gardens.:)
