  2. Just $12 for all that?! Wow! That is amazing, Indira!! I don’t think the farmer’s market at Boulder is this cheap! Is all of this organic produce?

    Indira replies:
Except for pineapple, every other item was for one dollar. Very cheap, I know.:), thanks Manisha.
Organic, please, most of the produce there is not even from Ohio. Very few stalls sell truly locally grown stuff. Organic and such labels are very rare in this rural area.

  3. Indira,
You have the Indian flag in your car? Cool!
All the fruits and veggies from the Farmer’s Market look so colourful and fresh. I am looking forward to all the recipes that you’ll come up with using them.

    Indira replies:
Yes, that is the Flag of Bharat.:)
    Thanks.

  6. Indira,
I like the shot of your popcorn… maybe I just want to eat it 😛 The veg and fruit you bought look absolutely wonderful, can’t wait to see your dishes made from them!

    Indira replies:
They do look tempting, don’t they? 🙂 My favorite part of this weekend routine was buying a small bag of fresh kettle corn.

  7. Wow Indira,I feel like shifting to the US!Food costs are very high in Switzerland,1 lime here, will cost around 1CHF!
Happy cooking!I know you will come up with mind blowing dishes with these!

    Indira replies:
Only during spring and summer and that too in farmers market. The price of these same items would be high in regular grocery shops, almost double the rate. But I agree, food here in US, costs very less.
    Thanks Sumitha.

  8. Hey indira, beautiful pictures and there is nothing more exciting than shopping fresh veggies. So lots of shopping and we could expect more recipes from you. Just imagine shopping the same in india(only vegetables), you would have two times more stuff and lot more variety. You know indira when i go shopping to the market in bangalore(vacation) i go crazy and bring home all possible vegetables that is in my view and frigde groans with the amount of food that is tuffed in. Last vacation i remember cauliflower was in season ans there 3 big ones for 10 rupees, and every one at home had cauliflower nightmares because of the frequency it got cooked. Here i miss all of that.

Anyway have fun and happy cooking.

    Indira replies:
    Thanks Shayna.
I agree, I love going to farmers market for veggies during spring and summer times here. But nothing could beat the farmers or ritu or produce markets of India. So much variety.
Cauliflower 3 for 10 rupees, wow, that’s a good price.
Cauliflower nightmares, aha :), if you ask me, cauliflower once a week is too much. 🙂

  9. Beautiful pictures Indira. Looks like you had fun shopping. Can’t wait to see what you cook with it. Strawberries look so pretty and healthy. If mangoes are the king of the fruits, strawberries can be the beauty queen, huh?

    Indira replies:
    Thanks RP.
    Strawberries are for Jihva.:)
What a beautiful sentiment, I totally agree. Strawberries are the queens, the high maintaince kind. 🙂
I’d add another to your comparison. Cherries are the royal offspring, the cheruby faced, round and cute, adorable darlings. 🙂
Do you mind if I introduce one of my strawberry post with this analogy?:) Thanks RP.

  10. Hey Indira,I was going through nandyala.org and i saw your blog how it looked like before you had your own site. It is really interesting to see your journey from there to now! You are a hard working person. Keep up your good work!

    Indira replies:
Thanks Sumitha. I love what I do and that prompted me to better myself. It’s still work in progress.:)
I hope you had fun, enjoyable time browsing through my old blog posts.:)

  11. Hey Indira, what happened to cutie Kittaya s pictures over the weekend?

    Indira replies:
Kittaya is very independent sort of guy. He won’t pose for us that often.:)

  12. You gotta love the farmers’ market. Such a treasure chest of good, healthy food for $12.
Note to Sumitha, I feel your pain… But do enjoy the vacherin cheese in winter time. It’ll make everything worth it!

    Indira replies:
    Thanks Susan.
Same in Italy too? High prices even in spring/summer? Wow.

  13. Indira, I love those freshness of those veggies. We dont have any farmer/flea market nearby 🙁 Pictures are cool esp the strawberry and fruits & veggies one. Hope you come up with exciting recipes 🙂

    Indira replies:
    Thanks Karthi.
You live near Lancaster/Philly, right? Checkout this flea/farmer’s market guide to find the markets near your place. Shopping in these types of markets is really fun, Karthi. Particularly to chidren, you can find all kinds of junk at a very low price and a timepass thing to do on a weekend.:)

  15. Indira,

This is like Haymarket, a huge wholesale produce market in Boston. On Saturday and Sunday they take over part of the street on the tip of the North End and sell everything you can think of — for anyone near Boston it’s well worth the trip.

    Great photos 🙂

    Indira replies:
This flea/farmers market is actually an old Youngtown airport in 50-60s, now defunct because of bad steel-mill economy here. That’s why it looks clean with paved roads etc.
Thanks for the tip about Boston area market, Linda.

    Comment by Linda — May 30, 2006 @ 12:15 am

  16. Food is so very expensive in Switzerland. I can’t imagine tat u got all those vegetables for just $12.

    Indira replies:
I know, my sister lives in England and she always tells me how pricey everything there.:)

  17. Oh Indira! I am glad you liked the analogy. Use it wherever you want. It is my pleasure. 🙂

    Indira replies:
Thanks RP. You have a generous heart. 🙂

  18. I love Farmer’s Markets!! Strawberries are so in season right now! I can’t wait for mine to turn red! One of these days my husband and I are going to head off to a U-Pick farm and get some berries. I see more radishes! 😉

    Indira replies:
Strawberries freshly picked from the farm have the best taste.
Join in the fun on June 1st with strawberries for Jihva, Amy?

    Comment by Amy — May 30, 2006 @ 11:34 am

  19. Hi Indira…I’m happy that you got to shop this week-end. I would just like to comment on one thing…the produce at your market is in boxes does not necessarily mean its not local…I was in salinas yesterday(called the salad bowl of america)..and while driving by a farm I saw people picking/harvesting strawberries and packing it in boxes right there in the fields and then selling it at their market(which was also in their field)…..these people probably need boxes to make sure their produce does not get bruised while taking it from their fields to the market place…so let’s give them the benefit of doubt, shall we? 🙂

    Indira replies:
I am very careful with these things, Nabeela. I don’t write about stuff like these unless it’s a fact. We did ask them about the source, the stall owners did told us that they ship produce from other states like California and Florida etc. They even sell produce advertising like farm fresh Florida oranges or California strawberries etc.

    Comment by Nabeela — May 30, 2006 @ 1:25 pm

  20. Oh Indira! I can imagine you browsing thru all these shops like a kid in candy store.

  26. I found out today the main building of Flea Market burned a few days ago(not sure when) but they plan to open the outdoor area this Sunday to vendors though.

Hello Allecia, I am sorry to read about this. I hope they build a new, improved facility to serve the flea market fans.
