Mahanandi

Living in Consciousness ~ Indi(r)a’s Food and Garden Weblog

One Millionth Visitor

Mahanandi is going to have its one millionth visitor today.

I began stat counting on June 2005, about one and half years ago and the number of visitors at that time was around 50 to 100 a day. Now Mahanandi is averaging about 5,000 to 6,000 visits and 14,000 to 16,000 page views a day and the number is constantly increasing. Reaching first million is a special benchmark in a blog’s history and the blog world ritual demands a post honoring the visitors who made it possible.

Thanks to all of you who have read and supported this site with words of encouragement and links. In return I want this post all about you, the visitors. You already know me through my posts and I would like to know you as well.

Who are you?
Where are you from?

Say hello and please feel free to share about yourself, your cooking interests – one sentence or one full page (forget about Mahanandi). This day is for you.

One of you going to be THE millionth visitor and for you, this special friendly rose.

First of all, I want to thank you for saying hello and letting me know about you. It is humbling and overwhelming to see such a response from you all. Some of you are regulars like me hanging in the web world and some of you drop by occasionally. If I ever wonder who you are, the affectionate note you have left will be my handy reference guide to know more about you.

I remember reading, “Food is like music. The possibilities are endless, and the learning curve never ends. They both satisfy the soul and make us feel good to be alive.”

I am glad to be around a group of positive people who think alike. Thank you!

  7. Hi Indira,

I think I am your millionth visitor 🙂
I stumbled upon your wonderful site just a couple of days ago, and now I am hooked. I showed my husband your website yesterday and he instantly said the pictures themselves make his mouth water (he loves good food).
Though I cook regularly, I get stuck in the rut and cook the same kind of food that I am comfortable cooking but now I am inspired to cook a variety of food after looking at the vast collection of recipes here.
Kudos to you for creating and maintaning such a huge and detailed collection of recipes.
    Thank you!

    Regards,
    Smita.

I am presently in London. I visit your site regularly . Today I was preparing a lunch to our freinds, followed your method to do – Sanaga Pappu Payasam & Nune Vankaya. Two days back prepared Methi cutney , came out very well. I read and try to follow the procedures suggested by U quite religeously. Also fan of ur presentation. I was not cooking regularly until now, through I enjoy cooking. So Ur ( this site ) Food dairy is a Dictonary for me. All the Best to U , near & dear & the site.

  11. Hi Indira–
I’ve never commented before. I found your blog a couple of weeks ago and have visited it a lot since. I just moved to Jackson Heights, New York, and even though I have no Indian heritage, I wanted to figure out how to cook all the interesting, unfamiliar things I saw in the local grocery store! So I googled some ingredients (the first was tindora) and found your site. So far I have cooked tindora two ways and eggplant in masala sauce. I thank you so much for sharing your family recipes!!! Next I think I will try the puffed rice upma.

My name is Nalini, native Madras, but living in Sunnyvale, CA now. I religiously visit your blog and have tried many of your recipes. I especially love your fantastic pics a lot! Since I am sort of impatient (I know, not good in the kitchen), I confess I sometimes just visit your blog to drool over your pics especially when I am taking a break at work! Yours was one of the blogs that inspired me to start my own, relatively young blog. Now I have to cultivate your photography skills, diligence in posting a blog everyday and of course your culinar expertise. Have a great day,

I started a year before you and still have 250,000 to go to hit that mark.

I remember when I did a feature on Indian cooking a year and a half ago and at the time I was hard pressed to find more than 2 Indian food blogs in existence back then.

I adore Indian food, so the explosion and success of Indian cooking blogs makes me very happy.

  51. Hi Indira,

Congrats on this milestone! I’m of mostly Tamil descent, grew up in Malaysia, now live in France with my husband. Basically, I grew up eating food like what you show here, with some small modifications — we South Indians in Malaysia use some of the local Malaysian ingredients, of course. For example, our most popular way of making mustard greens is a type of stir-fry with dried chillies, mustard seeds, and grated coconut — you can see the Indian roots of the recipe, but the vegetable is cooked for a much shorter time so that it remains sort of crunchy, almost Chinese-style.

Anyway, I just want to say: your website is such a valuable resource for me, demonstrating in such careful detail all my childhood favourites, with pictures — better than most cookbooks! Before, I had some problems making dosai and paneer, but following your methods step-by-step, I felt like I was taking individual cooking lessons from you. Thanks so much, and please keep up the wonderful work.

  59. Hello Indira,
Congratulations! I have been a frequent visitor since the days of over/under exposed pictures!(Just kidding):)

The first thing that attracted me was your “authentic andhra home cooked food”. If I remember right that was the search term that got me here. I think I saw one of your post having a picture of “muggu” in front of the house which made me feel nostalgic.

Your simplicity of preparation makes me feel so good about Andhra food. Especially those recipes based on non-restaurant available dishes like ponganallu, ravaladdus etc.. makes your blog a ready reference for expert techniques on those not so common preparantions for those away from home.

I like your writing style, vocabulary and the techniques you use in macro photography.

I am particularly amazed to observe your humbleness and maturity you show despite all the fame your blog is gaining in the blog world.

Also, your free and fair expression of political beliefs are quite interesting to read.

    Best Wishes,

  60. Hi Indira garu
I just love your blog, I did few recipes from your site like nuvvula undalu which just melts in mouth. Chana dhal payasam, pesara pappu payasam, chikudu kaya kura, spinach pappu ( I do it differently, but yours is easy to cook ) so i am cooking dhal your way now. Also thank you for introducing matikkaayalu to us . Here we find few veges to cook. After visiting your site, u showed us we can cook veges which are unfamiliar to Indians. For me you are like a food dictionary. I wish u well and your family and hope we can see more food ideas from your collection.
    with warm wishes

Indira, my first introduction to Andhra food was Avakkai pickle that Andhra friends got to the hostel and have been hooked ever since, the flavor, the taste, the heat, the aroma but no once place to find how to cook them. So you can imagine my joy on seeing your blog with authentic recipes, tips and steps. Have religiously visited your site ever since.

    Indira, you are an inspiration.

I stumbled onto your blog last year. And, I have been having fun from then on. I make sure that i read your blog when my tummy’s full. 😉

I have tried several recipes from your blog. I have saved your blog as a favourite in 5 computers so far. Even though, i’ve tried several recipes from your blog, it the avocado chappathi people talk about when i get together with my Tamil friends. I tried it last winter and used too much avocado, and the color was GREEN. And, people have associated you with my green chappathi (pachai chappathi in Tamil). But, i’ve directed some of my friends learning to make Indian dishes your way. And they are all very happy with the results. That’s one fo the reasons why I consider you to be the South Indian foodie ambassador.

Abt me: I’m a Tamil born in Srilanka, brought up in Tamil Nadu. Currently living in Montreal. I write in Tamil mostly.

  103. Indira, you and your family are inspiration to me as well. I am in Hershey, PA, USA area; I learn so much from your blogging. When I am in the kitchen, it is so often with your words in the form of a printout. When you were moving to Seattle, I conjured your presence when I was cooking. It may sound odd, but as a practicing Buddhist in a very Protestant Christian area, your guidance on this blog has really enhanced my faith practice by helping me celebrate ahimsa in the day-to-day, through the kitchen. Your generousity on the blog and in your school has set an example — I sometimes can feel a little incongruent in my environment. When I visit Mahandi I feel I am a little closer to a a familiar place. My thanks and congratulations, appreciation and blessings, to you and Vijay.

When I was visiting SF last year, I fell in love with Food Network…never changed the channel. Now I satisfy myself with their videos on their website. I do not eat nonveg but still I like watching them prepare it. I like Kylie Kwong’s shows too.
I entered food blog world a few months ago through Mahanandi. Since then, my morning ritual is to check mahanandi and another thai food blog I know.
After so much watching and reading, I have started a food blog of my own…just to keep track of my experimental cooking 🙂

    So thats me for you.

Indira, I really appreciate this post of yours and the way you expressed thanks to your fans 🙂

  126. Congratulations, Indira! I checked your site last night and there were 3 comments and this morning 125… this itself if amazing. I’m a tamilian living in Germany and adore everything about the blog… the write-ups, pictures and the simplicity with which you present the recipes. I think the best aspect is that you always remember to put forth the basic fact of indian cooking… balanced nutrition. Infact I learn(t) a lot from you how to mix and match and cook a balanced meal everyday.

Thanks for extending your creativity to so many cooking fans out here. Wishing you all the best… Latha

I am sure you have heard this a zillion times, but what makes your site totally different is your attention to details – it really shows in the stuff that you post.

Way to go and keep blogging great recipes.

  141. Indira,
    thanks for this lovely friendship-rose!
I’m originally from Hongkong, now have been living in New Jersey for 5 years, a housewife.
I cooked since I was a little girl (mom was working), so it’s a classic poor family, I couldn’t find any joy nor interest in my “duty”. Until now I enter this wide spectrum of food blogging, I eventually feel the fun (from friendship) and the celebration (of fresh local ingredients). Indira, you’re one of the most inspiring and friendly persons that I met when I just started blogging. Thanks for everything!
Congrats on the 1st million, and many many more!

  205. Hi Indira,

Congratulations on this milestone. I stumbled across your blog a few months ago and was hooked. Thanks for sharing your love and inviting us into your home. That’s how it feels.

I visit to look for new ways to cook the same old veges, yet ways that are meant for everyday cooking, dishes you can make again and again and again. Like the peanut chutney 🙂

Thanks for inspiring so many of us to share.

  206. Hi Indira

I am huge fan of yours. I came across your site just a couple of weeks back when I was searching on google for “gutti vankaya”. You had at least two recipes and my mom had given me her recipe. I read all three, changed the recipe a little to my taste and convenience and it was a super-duper hit.
From that time when I want to cook I first come to your site, check out if you have any recipes for that vegetable, imagine the taste and cook it with full enthusiasm.
I have to admit that I haven’t been as faithful to any other site as I am to yours. 🙂
I really have to congratulate you on your creativity and style. I can’t express how good I feel to come to your site, read the recipes and look at the mouth-watering pictures. If you are celebrating your one-millionth day today, its totally because of your talent.
Also, I am from hyderabad and your dishes are very close to my mom’s cooking, which makes food even more tasty for me.
Sorry for the extremely long post. I have been meaning to write to you for a while but for some reason I couldnt find this textbox until now.
Currently I live in Bellevue and I always wonder if I will stumble across you and Vijay somewhere someday. It will be a great pleasure meeting you guys.
But until then, I will be your faithful fan. 😉
Thank you very much for sharing your talent, enthusiasm and joy for cooking. It spreads!

  207. Hi Indira,

I love your website, I keep referring to various recipes of yours for ideas on how to do things. Your presentation quality is excellent, and the pictures really help in visulaizing what the end product is supposed to look like. I’m from Madurai originally, so your recipes are both familiar and exotic to me.

Thank you for sharing your cooking experiences and expertise with the world.

I’m a 39 year old software engineer based in Los Angeles. And I was doubly excited when I found out you’re an Atrios, DailyKos, Colbert fan too.

Here’s wishing you many more exciting kitchen experiences as the rest of us peer over your virtual shoulder.

    Regards.
